Did you know that runners and walkers often have several skincare needs that can be easily solved?
In 2016, after 25 years of practicing Dermatology, I became President of Big River Silk Skincare™ to manufacture and distribute gentle but effective skin cleansers and moisturizers for runners and walkers.
Here are some of my tips:
Tip #1: It’s helpful to lubricate your skin, before and/or after workouts, particularly if you have dry hands and feet, to cut down on cracking or fissuring, which can lead eventually to outbreaks of eczema. Options include Cetaphil®, Aveeno®, Eucerin®, and Cerave®. Big River Silk Skincare also manufactures and distributes a fragrance-free Alpha-Hydroxy Acid moisturizer – GlycoShea™ Hand&Body Cream – also free of sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, propylene glycol, and dyes (1 oz: $19.95/2 oz; $29.95/8 oz: $129.95). It can be applied at night, while wearing a sock overnight, to remove calluses and dryness, with its Glycolic Acid ingredient working making it into an anti-wrinkle cream.
Tip #2: It’s helpful to use a deep cleanser after running or walking, to cut down on complexion issues. Neutrogena® bar soap, Aveeno®, and Purpose® Facial Cleanser are options. Big River Silk Skincare also manufactures one of the few commercially available soap gels – AmberSoy® Soap Gel – which can be used as a face or trunk mask for five minutes before rinsing off, for a really deep clean. Available in Lemon, Mint, and No Fragrance Added (1 oz: $12.95/2 oz: $18.95/8 oz: $59.95).
Tip #4: Don’t forget your sunscreen! Outdoor athletes are at higher risk of skin cancer due to extra exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, so select a sunscreen spray or lotion that’s labeled as “broad-spectrum,” and “water-resistant,” with an SPF or 30 or higher. A personal favorite is over-the-counter Vanicream® Sunscreen Sport SPF 35 (4 oz: $17.95).
Tip #5: Be careful to prevent upper legs and underarms rubbing or chafing. It helps to use a lubricating moisturizer, such as Cetaphil® or Cerave®. Big River Silk Skincare formulated HypoShea™ Moisturizer Cream from Refined Shea Butter to help reduce friction on the legs and arms. It’s free of perfumes, dyes, sulfates, and propylene glycol (1 oz: $12.95/2 oz: $18.95/8 oz: $39.95).
And if you have a significant skin issue on your feet – like a changing mole, or a wart or possible fungal infection, my own Dermatology practice is in Cordova, TN, with Rheumatology and Dermatology (www.Rheumderm.com; 1-901-753-0168). You can also find a Dermatologist close to you by going to the American Academy of Dermatology web site, www.AAD.org, then plugging your zip code into the “Find a Dermatologist” tab. Don’t delay.
